December 17, 2024 – Burnaby -- OSI is pleased to announce that it has been contracted by the Portuguese Navy - Marinha Portuguesa MP to upgrade the Navy to an ECPINS Fleet Wide License. The upgrade will include the latest version of ECPINS and subsequent updates to ECPINS 7.

The Portuguese Navy is one of OSI's oldest customers and the long-standing relationship is demonstrated by ECPINS' deployment throughout the Fleet. This extensive deployment of ECPINS as the Navy's standard WECDIS ensures a robust and scalable tactical warship navigation solution for many years to come.

ECPINS, OSI Warship ECDIS, is deployed by 26 NATO and Allied navies. ECPINS complies with all major electronic chart system standards, including those of the IHO and IEC, and is the only WECDIS third-party type-approved against NATO WECDIS STANNAG 4564. 

The contract includes core ECPINS software Fleet Wide as well as Platform specific leading-edge tactical Capabilities Modules, including:

GNSS Denied Capability - Originally developed for submarine navigation without GPS, this feature is now critical for surface navigators. It enables accurate positioning in environments where GNSS signals are unreliable or unavailable due to spoofing, jamming, obstructions, or satellite limitations.

SHOL (Ship Helicopter Operating Limits) - Essential for vessels with flight decks, SHOL automates manual calculations, providing instant recommendations for optimal course and speed. This ensures safe aircraft operations—whether helicopters or UAVs—while allowing bridge watchkeepers to maintain their primary duties.

Radar Control Module - Integrating directly with digital navigation radar, this feature allows radar tuning, range adjustment, blank sector setup, and mode switching (Transmit, Standby, Off) within the ECPINS interface. It also enhances ARPA functionality for tactical target tracking.

Small Craft Operations - Paired with OSI’s T-ACT system and encrypted AIS, this module enables seamless communication between the mothership and small craft. Operators can exchange locations, routes, text messages, and operational data, fostering coordinated missions with real-time updates.

In parallel, we have been awarded earlier this year of a contract from Damen Shipyards to deliver a comprehensive Integrated Navigation and Tactical System (INTS) bridge for the Portuguese Navy's cutting-edge Multi-Purpose Vessel. This 107-meter platform is designed to support a wide range of critical operations, including oceanic research, search and rescue, emergency relief, and naval missions. Notably, the vessel is equipped to serve as a dedicated Uncrewed Vehicle (UxV) mother ship, underscoring its advanced, multi-role capabilities.
