ECPINS Generation 8 Successfully Passes Critical Design Review
• ECPINS Generation 8 will be the most advanced and user-friendly WECDIS available
• ECPINS 8 will represent a complete renewal of the user interface and modernization of visual and interaction techniques
• Key enhancements include streamlined access to features and workflow optimization
September 24, 2024, Vancouver, Canada - With the goal of enhanced crew and ship safety, OSI has embarked on a rearchitecting of the ECPINS user experience (UX) and is pleased to introduce ECPINS Generation 8 (ECPINS 8) and the successful completion of its Critical Design Review (CDR). The CDR was conducted by OSI and in collaboration with the Royal Danish Navy and United Kingdom Royal Navy.
ECPINS is the only WECDIS (Warship Electronic Display Information System) which is third-party Type Approved against NATO STANAG 4564 – the gold-standard benchmark for WECDIS.
ECPINS 8 is currently planned for release in 2028 and will mark a significant milestone in OSI’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the user experience of its products through continuous improvement and research.
ECPINS 8 focuses on a complete renewal of the user interface, modernizing both visual style and interaction techniques. Migrating the capabilities of ECPINS 7, Generation 8 represents a substantial evolution of enhanced usability, offering sleek, modern aesthetic and intuitive controls that improve task completion and interaction efficiency.
The redesign reduces cognitive load, alleviating user fatigue. The reorganization of features enhances logical presentation, removes redundant processes, and speeds up information retrieval. These improvements are particularly valuable in high-tempo situations, where quick decision-making and efficient navigation are critical.
In addition to general software improvements, Generation 8 incorporates domain-specific advancements to boost situation awareness and decision support. The software now supports enhanced operator and team effectiveness by reducing the cognitive burden associated with simultaneous decision-making. Its flexible design supports both mission and shipset-level operations, offering scalable solutions for tactical navigation.
The ability to switch between operational modes with customizable settings will enhance operational efficiency, compliance with fleet operating procedures, and crew situational awareness. These enhancements will also increase the value of ECPINS for training and briefings, especially during watch changes.
Quote: “ECPINS 8 will uphold OSI’s reputation for delivering the top navigation and tactical solutions for NATO and Allied navies. We guarantee that it will introduce new, innovative features and a modern look and feel that will surpass expectations.” Ken Kirkpatrick, President and CEO, OSI Maritime Systems
"ECPINS Generation 8 will truly revolutionize the way electronic chart navigation is done – we're very excited about the possibilities as ECPINS 8 is developed further.” Jordan Pratt, Vice President, Product Development, OSI Maritime System
