CADSI APPLAUDS GOVERNMENT ACTIONS TO SUPPORT DEFENCE AND SECURITY INDUSTRIES

Ottawa, August 19, 2011 – The Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI), today expressed the appreciation of its 860 members to the Government of Canada for the $149,000 grant it received under its Global Opportunities for Associations (GOA) program. The announcement was made yesterday in Montreal by the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and Senator Claude Carignan.

“Canada’s defence and security industries are global leaders in their field, employing 90,000 people who deliver world-class equipment and services to our Canadian Forces and Allies,” said CADSI President Tim Page. “Today’s announcement is another demonstration of the government’s commitment to the strength of Canada’s defence and security sectors and the creation of highly skilled and value-added jobs that will keep our economy moving. Tangible actions such as the promise of a defence procurement strategy in the June 2011 Budget and today’s Global Opportunities for Associations Program announcement show the government’s resolve to keep our country strong, free, as well as prosper.”

In an era marked by a fragile global economy and fiscal restraint, actions that help Canada’s defence and security industries succeed on the national and global scale will contribute to the prosperity and quality of life of Canadians. Strengthening our defence and security industries’ ability to succeed in domestic and foreign markets stimulates the creation of knowledge-based jobs as well as increases private sector led research and development. Furthermore, a government –wide approach to export supports is one of the key pillars of every nations defence industrial strategy. CADSI and its members will continue to work with the Government of Canada to support its efforts and develop solutions that will help to protect our sovereignty, keep Canadians safe, and help to maximize jobs, innovation and economic growth.
