Canada’s Defence and Security Industries Support Federal Budget

Ottawa, June 7, 2011 – The Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI), today, described the new majority Conservative government’s first budget as a clear commitment to strengthening Canada's economy, security and sovereignty.

“In promising to create a procurement strategy to maximize jobs, innovation and economic growth in Canada from defence spending, the Conservative Government has recognized the complementary link between a strong domestic economy and a sovereign and secure nation”, said CADSI President Tim Page.

Important defence procurements lie ahead for Canada as part of the Conservative Government’s 20-year Canada First Defence Strategy for armoured land vehicles and trucks, modernizing the soldier system, naval and coast guard vessels to protect our coastlines and the next generation fighter and search and rescue aircraft to protect our skies and bring timely and effective support to those in need. This important initiative will also stimulate private sector-led R&D; strengthen our industry’s ability to succeed in home and foreign markets; and, underscores the vital role played by our industries 90,000 knowledge-based workers in support of national security.

"The June 6th Budget signals the Government’s commitment to strengthen Canada’s security with two key and inter-related ingredients: new equipment for the military and a strategic role for Canadian industry in these upcoming procurements," said Page. "CADSI and its 860 members look forward to working with the Government to achieve these important objectives in the weeks and months to come."
